Jakarta (The Jakarta Post: (10/02/08) A long way from the hectic urban hustle and bustle, a small town stands as a model of educational excellence. This is Sekayu, the capital of Musi Banyuasin regency, 90 kilometers north of Palembang, South Sumatra, where a school has turned out a generation of brilliant students. The Jakarta Post correspondent Khairul Saleh recently visited the state senior high school, SMA2 Sekayu, one of the most well-known schools in town, and discovered a school of international standing amid the green environs of the area.

Jakarta (Kompas: (02/02/08) Around 60% of 11.6 million unemployed persons in Indonesia in 2007 are youngsters below 25 years old. This shows that our education curriculum and job training failed to meet job market demand. This issue was raised by the chairman of Indonesian Entrepreneurs Association (Apindo) Sofyan Wanandi after he inaugurated automotive training in Bekasi on Friday (1/2). The number of unemployed people keeps on raising every year and vocational school graduates do not possess enough skill to enter the job market.

Jakarta (Koran Tempo: (23/01/08) During the teachers’ certification process, independent teams, as well as the internal team established by National Education Ministry’s Teachers’ Certification Consortium and the public have learnt about rampant cheating and violation committed by teachers who joined the certification through portfolio assessment. The irregularities found were varying from falsification of training certificate, award certificate, teaching working plan, and fake diploma. Moreover, almost all of the fake documents have been legalized by their school principles. There were also briberies, where money has been inserted among the documents submitted. The most embarrassing case was reported when assessor found a teacher replacing the photo of an original certificate owner with his own photograph in a falsified document which unfortunately for them mixed with the documents photocopies submitted for certification process. Each Teachers Training Institute appointed to oversee the certification process in their respective regions keeps the record of those irregularities.
