Jobless University Graduates

Jakarta (Kompas: 22/09/06) Since the past 15 years, there are more jobless among higher education graduates. The data from Kompas (4/3/1997) revealed, that in 1989 and in 1995 the number of jobless university graduates was growing by 22.73 annually (14.97% among junior and senior high school level graduates; and 29.7% among elementary school graduates and dropouts). Out of the 22.73% growth of higher education institution graduates, the number of jobless university graduates is higher that those of other higher education institutions’ (such as academy), or 61,007 persons in 1989 and 241,413 in 1995.

Yogyakarta (Koran Tempo: 21/09/06) The government targets to finish rebuilding over 1,500 schools damaged by the earthquake in Yogyakarta and Central Java by the end of 2007. Afterwards, the government hopes that there will be no more students learning under makeshift tents. “We are optimistic that by Dec 2007, all schools in earthquake-affected areas would have been rebuilt,” said National Education Minstry’s Secretary General Dodi Nandika in Yogyakarta yesterday. For that purpose, the government has set aside Rp 3.5 trillion from the state budget.
