Jakarta, April 16, 2008 – In the run-up to the commemoration of the 100th anniversary of National Awakening, Sampoerna Foundation plans to hold a number of activities. To kick off this series of events, Sampoerna Foundation will hold a media discussion on” Women Crusading for Education” to highlight the contribution of women to education in Indonesia at Anomali Coffee, Jakarta (16/04).
This discussion will feature three speakers who have contributed to the education sector in their own ways. The first speaker is Septi Peni Wulandari, who developed a calculation system that she named Jarimatika, which has enhanced the teaching of mathematics among the underprivileged.
The second speaker is a woman who has spent more than 30 years serving in the field of education in Indonesia, Dra. Hj. Niken Asih Santjojo, the principal of SMA 10 High School in Malang. The third speaker is Rieke Diah Pitaloka, who has for past several years contributed immensely to handling social welfare problems in Indonesia, particularly those faced by women. Besides that, Rieke has also shown a great deal of concern for the world of education with the opening up of Taman Bacaan reading centers.
This discussion featuring these three women will focus on the various contributions that women can make to Indonesia’s education sector. The results of this discussion are expected to inspire women all over Indonesia to participate in improving the quality of education in Indonesia.
Among the other events planned to commemorate National Awakening Day is the Education Awakening Parade scheduled for May 18, 2008. Sampoerna Foundation is cooperating with a number of parties, such as the Department of National Education, the Jakarta Municipal Administration, the private sector and others. The purpose of this event is to motivate greater public participation in education in Indonesia because this sector needs the involvement of people from all levels of society across the archipelago.
Sapto Handoyo Sakti, Director of Communications for Sampoerna Foundation said, “The commemoration of one hundred years of national awakening serves as a reminder to us, in the sense of a warning that we must take a look at what we have actually been doing for our country, especially for its education sector. Education in Indonesia requires the contribution of everyone, whether or not they are teachers, or businesspeople, politicians, artists, civil servants or just any man in the street. Everyone must have a sense of responsibility toward making education in Indonesia better than it is now.”
About The Education Parade – In the Run-up to the Century of National Awakening Commemoration
As a century since the National Awakening movement was born nears, Sampoerna Foundation, in cooperation with the Department of National Education, the Jakarta Municipal Administration and other strategic partners, will holed an Education Parade on May 18, 2008, starting at the National Monument, Jakarta. This Education Parade is part of the campaign to express the concern of various elements of society about the need to improve the quality of education in Indonesia. This event, hat will feature the participation of 5,000 to 10,000 people in the education sector is meant to remind us all that education is the responsibility of all levels of society. Besides this parade, Sampoerna Foundation and the Department of Education, and key figures from the nation’s education sector, will declare the Global Education Sector Goals for Indonesia for the next 10 years.
