Report Details1) March For EducationOn 18 May 2008 the Foundation successfully executed the National Education Awakening Parade in conjunction with the National Department of Education, the Jakarta Provincial Government, Lumbung Informasi Rakyat (LIRA), a local NGO and Lembaga Pendidikan dan Pengembangan Profesi Indonesia (LP3I), a local institution for education and professional development. The event was aimed at drawing attention to and support for the cause of raising the quality of Indonesia’s education and to emphasize the importance that all members of society become involved in the process. The event was attended by Putera Sampoerna and family; Jakarta Governor, Fauzi Bowo and other high ranking government officials. The total number of participants was estimated to be between 12,000 – 15,000 people, including 4500 students and 500 teachers from educational institutions sponsored by SF and its partners; 400 representatives from SF partners; 3 groups of drum bands; and 1 marching band. Aside from the parade, the crowds at Monas were entertained by exciting performances from the SF Band “Beat Waiver”, musical collaboration by various schools in Jakarta, as well as an electrifying performance by the musical group Wong Pitoe. 2) CEO Breakfast Series for Thought-LeadershipConcerted efforts were also directed in planning and executing key thought-leadership events such as the first session of the SF CEO Breakfast Series. The CEO Breakfast is an intimate, informal and by invitation-only discussion forum among top CEOs, which was held on 28 March 2008. The objective was to engage, participate and develop relationships with the business community to drive social responsibility. This informal discussion forum among top CEOs in a chosen industry is an effort to bring together different perspectives and insights on current issues affecting Indonesia. Future CEO Breakfast Series organized by the Foundation will focus on industry-specific topics in the areas of oil & gas, mining, agro, transportation, and other industries, and feature expert speakers representing each area of expertise. The first event of the series took place at the Ritz Carlton Pacific Place Jakarta. 3) CSR ExchangeThe CSR Exchange 2008 Seminar is a monthly series launched on February 13th in collaboration with Sampoerna School of Business & Management – ITB (SSBM-ITB). This is a platform for CSR managers to share knowledge, ideas and best practices in philanthropy and CSR. The highly-anticipated seminar held on the 24th floor of the Sampoerna Strategic Square Building and themed ‘Hand in Hand for a Better Indonesia’, was the kick-off for the series scheduled throughout 2008. 4) Ministry of Education selects SF to disburse Government ScholarshipsThe Ministry of Education has selected Sampoerna Foundation to act as “Evaluator” in the selection of candidates for its Scholarship Program, whose graduates are hoped to contribute to areas in need of development. The ministry’s scholarship program is targeted at promising students in the senior high school through doctorate degree level, teachers, and staff of local governments as well as those with notable achievements in national level olympiads, science writing competitions, art competitions, sports. The Ministry is seeking the Foundation’s expertise in assessing the effectiveness of the scholarship program in developing productive graduates that can assist in advancing various sectors including government, private and entrepreneurial. 5) Change in SF Executive Management TeamLin Che Wei accepts Senior Advisor role for both SF and Sampoerna Strategic. SF appoints Ron Perkinson as new President of SF, who was formerly the Senior Vice President of Whitney International University System (WIUS) based in Dallas, Texas. Prior to joining WIUS, Ron Perkinson was the Principal Education Specialist at the International Finance Corporation, World Bank Group. 6) New Strategic Alliance - Dompet DhuafaThe Foundation has garnered the support of several key alliances who share the Foundation’s vision. Among these is Dompet Dhuafa, who is particularly interested in assisting Muslim students by improving the quality of teachers and increasing the number of international standard schools. SF and Dompet Dhuafa entered an agreement to improve the quality of education for Muslim students, formalized through an MoU signed by Dompet Dhuafa Program Director Ahmad Juwaini and SF Communications Director Sapto H. Sakti on 11 April 2008. 7) New Corporate Partners

CITIC Seram Energy Ltd. & BHP Billiton in conjunction with Sampoerna Foundation are committed to supporting teachers in East Seram and Murung Raya. The two parties will make possible the provision of training aimed at improving not only the educators’ teaching methodology, but also the principals’ leadership skills. The contribution is expected to benefit more than 110 teachers in both regencies. This collaboration was marked by the MoU signing ceremony, which took place at the Indonesian Teachers Congress (KGI) on 27 November 2007. Sampoerna Foundation has selected 5 candidates as Clariant National Undergraduate Scholarship Program recipients, short-listed from the 10 applicants invited for interview sessions on 15 November 2007. The interview panel consisted of representatives from Sampoerna Foundation and PT. Clariant Indonesia. PT Clariant is dedicated to educating a skilled workforce in its operation areas and one that is relevant to its industry. It also hopes to direct new talent to the field of science. In November 2007, the Sampoerna Foundation Teacher Institute (SFTI) in collaboration with government education offices in Bangka-Belitung, Bali, and DKI Jakarta, and the School of Education at the Edith Cowan University (ECU) in Perth launched the Master Teacher Program. The premise of this program is to develop 18 master teachers and 6 master school leaders who, after the program, will share their knowledge with a greater number of teachers, hence creating a cascading effect and allowing more teachers to be better equipped in educating their students. To master the practice of storing all school-related information in a systematic way, 12 teachers and IT personnel from Pondok Pesantren Annuqayah, Sumenep-Madura attended a Microsoft Access Training session on 31 October – 5 November 2007. Indonesia Business Case Center (IBCC) has begun discussions to sign an MoU with European Case Clearing House (ECCH) on the details of a working partnership. Consequently, IBCC Case Clearing House SOP is currently being prepared. When it starts operating next year, it will be the means by which IBCC cases (in addition to those of IBCC’s partners) will be distributed. IBCC has also started sending cases to Prof. James Erskine of the Richard Ivey Business School, Canada and to Jamie Anderson, Senior Lecturer at the European School of Management and Technology, to undergo a stringent reviewing process, to ensure that the study cases are of the highest quality. |
