A total of 830 teachers and Principals from 30 public lower secondary schools in Karawang have joined a teacher quality improvement program made possible through the collaboration of the Regional Government of Karawang, PT HM Sampoerna Tbk. and Sampoerna Foundation. The provision of the training was made official today through the signing of an MoU by Elan Merdy, Chief Operating Officer Sampoerna Foundation and the Regent of Karawang, Dadang S. Muchtar and witnessed by Hadi Fauzan, Director of Corporate Affairs and Niken Rachmad, Director of Communications PT. HM Sampoerna Tbk., at the Karawang Regent’s office today.

The formalizing of the teacher quality improvement program constitutes a three-year program which is a continuation of PT. HM Sampoerna’s commitment, which the company signed this past March 2008. PT. HM Sampoerna will channel the funds to the Sampoerna Foundation to carry out the provision of teacher and principal quality improvement training in three regions, namely Karawang Regency, Surabaya Municipality and the city and regency of Pasuruan. Overall, as many as 90 principals and 2,270 teachers are expected to attend the training.

According to data by the Ministry of National Education in 2005-2006 highlight the fact that less than half of all principals and teachers in Karawang have yet to attain an undergraduate degree; 35.98% for principals and 41,20 % for teachers.

The teacher and principal quality improvement training covers skills in leadership, innovative teaching methodology, master teacher, research on classroom management, participation in the Indonesian Teacher Congress as well as the establishment of a research center for selected applicants.

“We expect that after the program, teachers, principals and Education Department staff will be empowered to holistically integrate the efforts of all stakeholders in education so as to bring about new innovation in the education sector,” Dadang S. Muchtar, the Regent of Karawang said during the agreement signing ceremony.

Elan Merdy, COO of Sampoerna Foundation pointed out that the program was part of a continuation of a solid joint effort between the private, non-profit, and public sector. “The training is part of a sustainable effort which have included other education quality improvement programs held previously which were also funded by PT HM Sampoerna Tbk. With the support and active involvement from the Regional Government of Karawang, we are optimistic that more children in Indonesia will be provided access to quality education. It is hoped that through this program the capacity of Karawang students will increase. If every teacher educates 40 students, more than 33,200 Karawang student would have benefited from better teaching,” Mr. Merdy elaborated.

PT. HM Sampoerna Tbk., acting as a witness to the MoU signing proceedings stated that “One of the primary aims of PT. HM Sampoerna’s social responsibility activities aimed towards the community include efforts to raise education quality. We believe this program will give added value to the country’s educators and contribute towards the advancement of this nation” Niken Rachmad said.
