Ikrar tersebut menjadi bagian dari Parade Kebangkitan Pendidikan nasional yang diselenggarakan Sampoerna Foundation (SF), Pemerintah Provinsi DKI Jakarta, dan Lumbung Informasi Rakyat (LIRA) dalam rangka memperingati Hari pendidikan Nasional dan 100 tahun Kebangkitan Nasional. According to CEO of Sampoerna Foundation, Lin Che Wei, the pledge for education was declared because although it has been already a century that Indonesia has experienced national awakening, problems to the education sector have yet to be dealt with. “We are indeed more educated now, however, only a select few are aware of the importance of education,” said Lin Che Wei on the sidelines of the event.

Up to this point in time, he continued, Indonesia has been hit by many crisis, beginning with natural disaster through to economic hardships. “With every coming crisis, the nation has always recovered and come back stronger. We hope that this momentum will allow us to rise up together,” he said.

The declaration of the pledge was read by Lin Che Wei and witnessed by the events’ participants which comprised of education activists, teachers, students, and university scholars. Furthermore, a symbolic signing of a set of actions needed to carry out the “Second National Awakening” was signed by Jakarta Governor Fauzi Bowo, Governor of Gorontalo, Fadel Muhammad, Sampoerna Foundation founder, Putera Sampoerna, Akbar Tandjung, Vice Head of the People's Consultative Assembly, Aksa Mahmud, President of LIRA, M. Yusuf Rizal, Miss Indonesia 2005, Imelda Fransisca, actor Samuel Rizal and musician Maylaffaza.

With the declaration of the pledge, they have shown their commitment in putting education as the primary tool in bringing long term stability and prosperity to the nation through the provision of quality education for all Indonesians, and the creation of a generation of leaders who are morally upright.

According to Mr. Fauzi Bowo, the current momentum leading up to National Awakening Day is the right moment, because it has the potential to unite all members of society. “Education is instrumental in creating an Indonesia with dignity and independence.

This coming together of all stakeholders of education, Lin Che Wei hopes will create a positive change for the education sector in Indonesia.
