MEASAT Invites 5 Indonesian Youths to Baikonur Cosmodrome
(JAKARTA – Kompas:11/08/08) Five Indonesian youths have been invited to the Cosmodrome in Baikanur, Kazakhstan for the launch of the MEASAT-3a satellite, owned by Malaysian-based company. The five of them have been given the opportunity to watch state-of-the-art Russian space technology in action during their week-long visit.

“They will see first hand how Russian space technology evolved from its humble beginnings to its current state. Hopefully, this will raise Indonesia’s youth interest in science and technology,“ says Sapto Handoyo Sakti, Communication Director Sampoerna Foundation in Jakarta, Monday (11/8). He added that the collaboration was possible since Measat is in the same company group as ASTRO, one of Sampoerna Foundation’s donors.

The five youths selected are Hilman Faturrahman of Institut Teknologi Bandung, I Made Urip Palatama of SMAN 1 Kintamani Bali public school, I Wayan Alit Sudarsana of SMAN 1 Semarapura Bali public school, Sylvia Ayu Pradanawati of Institut Institut Teknologi Bandung and Dimas Yusuf Danurwenda of Institut Teknologi Bandung. According to Rini Tampi, Head of Student Loan Sampoerna Foundation, these students were selected as Sampoerna Foundation scholarship holders because of their outstanding performance on both the national and international arena.

Aside from counting down the final moments to the launch at location, the five students will also tour the Russian Space Program’s Roskosmos facility. One of the facilities they will visit is a training center for Kosmonots, the Russian term for astronout, at Star City.

During their journey, each of the five students will share their experiences on a weblog or blog that has been created in advance. This blog, located on the world wide web at http://reach4thestars.wordpress.com will be filled with blog entries telling of their trip to Russia and Kazakhstan.

Their departure had been scheduled for 21 August 2008. However, a technical problem to the satellite has resulted in the postponing of their departure to a date yet to be announced. Measat-3a, which will be used to provide television broadcast and telecommunication services, is currently being hauled back for repair at Orbital Sciences, the company which produced the satellite in Dulles, United States.
