1,000 books for 3 State Elementary Schools in Tangerang

The reading habits of the Indonesian populace are poor. Data from the Statistics Board Center (Badan Pusat Statistik: BPS) for 2006 indicates that only 23.5t percent of Indonesians read to get information. This figure is low compared to the 85.9 percent who prefer to watch television and the 40.3 percent who listen to the radio.

“Reading is the key to knowledge, and the storehouse of knowledge is books. School libraries with complete collections of quality books are expected to improve the desire to read among students. Hopefully this donation of books will improve the motivation of the school children at these three elementary schools to read,” said Irwan M. Habsjah.

The conditions at the three school libraries were sub-standard.  A lack of space a SDN Cirendue IV and SDN Larangan had led to the library being replaced with a computer center. “With this donation of books, we have been motivated to make a concerted effort to revive the school library. In the meantime, the library will share the room with the computer center, with the expectation that another space can be arranged for the library soon. Thank you to ING Bank N.V and Sampoerna Foundation!” said Jayani Adnan, Principal of SDN Cirendeu IV elementary school in Tangerang, representing the three grade schools that received the books.

“This donation of books from ING Bank IV shows a strong commitment to education from the private sector. The development of the quality of schools toward solving the complex education problems in Indonesia is the responsibility of all elements of society, said Vira Soekardirman, Sales Director for Sampoerna Foundation.
