| 1,000 Teachers Will Attend International Quality National Congress |

“Think Global, Act Local” The Sampoerna Foundation Teacher Institute (SF TI) in cooperation with the Department of National Education (Departemen Pendidikan Nasional: Depdiknas) and other partners will hold the Indonesian Teachers Congress (Kongress Guru Indonesia: KGI) on November 27-28, 2008. This two-day international quality congress for Indonesian teachers with the theme “Think Global, Act Local”, held in connection with the commemoration of National Teachers Day, will be attended by more than 1,000 teachers from throughout Indonesia. The congress was formally launched to the public by the PMPTK Director General of Depdiknas, Dr. Baedowhi M.Si., and the Director of SF TI, Kenneth Cock, at SF TI in Jakarta, October 21, 2008.
Kenneth Cock (Ken), Director SF TI, said during the launch of the event that the KGI Congress was a mean to support the professionalism of teachers in Indonesia. “This congress is meant to assist teachers to upgrade their expertise and knowledge and to boost their confidence toward exploring new ideas. Teaching, as is the case with other professions, requires periodic upgrading of skills. KGI is a congress held for teachers to help them improve their quality as educators and to provide them with an opportunity to share their knowledge and experiences,” Ken said. Ken added that he expected that KGI 2008 would inspire and motivate teachers Indonesia to improve the quality of their work. “We really hope that through the improvement of the skills and professionalism of teachers in Indonesia, they will have the ability to compete globally without losing their identities as Indonesian teachers,” Ken added. SF TI, hosted the first Indonesian Teachers Congress (Kongress Guru Indonesia: KGI) in 2006. This is the third in the series. This year, the congress offers a variety of highly credential educators as speakers, including the Minister of National Education Bambang Sudibyo and a number from within the country and abroad, such as Dr. Komaruddin Hidayat, the Rector of UIN Syarif Hidayatullah; H.E Dr.Ediberto C.de Jesus, former President of the Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization (SEAMEO) Council; Prof. Dr. Edy Tri Baskoro, a member of the National Standard Education Body (Badan Standar Nasional Pendidikan: BSNP); Prof. S. Gopinatha, Head of the Center of Research in Pedagogy and Practice NIE, NTU, Singapore; Jim Dellit Adjunct Senior Research Fellow Division of Education, Art and Social Sciences, University of South Australia and Jillian Delit, Director of the Learning Federation Secretariat, Australia. Besides that, KGI 2008 has asked principals, lecturers and teachers from throughout Indonesia to speak at the congress as well. As many as 10 papers will be selected, based on their ability to inspire teachers throughout the country. The KGI 2008 is supported by the private sector. Deva Rachman, Communications Manager for Exxon Mobil Indonesia (EMOI), said that EMOI is very supportive of the presentation of KGI 2008 as a part of its community empowerment program. “We believe that KGI is an activity that provides an opportunity for teachers in Indonesia to share their experiences, so that each and every teacher can expand their horizons and take home new ideas to develop education in their own regions,” Deva explained. KGI 2008 will be held on Thursday and Friday, November 27 and 28, 2008, at Balai Kartini in Jakarta. The organizers of KGI 2008 welcome the support of all parties, both individuals and institutional, from both the state and private sector, who are willing to sponsor or send teachers from the regions to attend this congress. So far, Exxon Mobil Indonesia (EMOI), Mobil Cepu Ltd., Astra Federal Internationl Finance, ACE Insurance, Hero Tbk, Giant, Guardian, White Horse, Plaza Senayan and ABC Radio Australia, have stepped up with support for this year’s congress.
