Palembang, November 10, 2008 – The Provincial Government of South Sumatra and Sampoerna Foundation (SF) announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding for the construction of a School International Program (SIP) high school in Palembang.

The globalization of local education is required in order to better prepare future leaders for Indonesia who will become players in international relations. “The School International Program (SIP) has been formulated and designed to become an “education model” for local high schools in order to improve the quality of secondary education institutions throughout South Sumatra. SIP is expected to bring change to the education system through the better education of students and the training and upgrading of teachers, as well as the improvement of the overall educational and evaluation system,” explained Elan.

School International Program (SIP) schools feature a combination of domestic and international curricula, which strengthens certain fields of study and introduces and applies professional management principles oriented toward development and advancement. The SIP school features student dormitories designed to develop the students holistically so that they can become leaders in international circles in the future.

The Provincial Government of South Sumatra has expressed its support of SIP by providing land for the construction of a school and a dormitory with a capacity to house 450 students.  With the enrollment target at 150 students for each of the three high school levels, each class scheduled will have around 25 students. All 450 students will benefit from the dormitory housing that is designed to not only support their academic studies, but also to provide “life-skills” experiences that will be of advantage in character building.

”We hope this program will provide opportunities to gifted South Sumatran children, especially in relation to improving the education system so that our future human resources will have strong leadership capabilities and the ability to think critically, as well as concern for important domestic and international issues, and the ability to use the English language properly, so that they can work and compete on a sustainable level,” Alex emphasized.

Alex Noerdin added that:”SIP will not only benefit the gifted students of our region with free schooling, but will also be open to other students from all over the province and Indonesia as a whole.”
