Students of SMAN 2 Sekayu
Our SF USP schools are rigorously selected based on the commitment of the local government, the National Education Department (Dewan Pendidikan Nasional=DIKNAS), the principals and the teachers of the school amongst other factors. The selected schools must have a desire and commitment for improvement. Most of SF USP schools lack suitable physical facilities; however, and development of these is are supported by the local government

Education in Schools during and after SF USP

SF USP has ambitiously introduced a series of long-term high-impact programs that are continuously being added to, modified and improved in conjunction with the process of change within each school and new developments in the world of education. Teachers and principal capacity have been assisted by SF USP in many ways, particularly in general pedagogy, subject content and leadership skills. SF USP has partnered with many organizations, including the National Institute of Education in Singapore, to assist schools on their trek for school renewal. The relationship between the SF USP schools has been enhanced through the USP training programs.

Principals and teachers keep in regular contact with each other other, sharing ideas for better management and professional development. Students participate in many programs such as, community service projects, Toastmasters, moral and character development programs, language development programs, as well as various academic training activities.

Considerable effort is put into English language training and Fulbright scholars are placed in SF USP schools for a year to assist in English language training. Principals, teachers and students have made good progress in their training programs during the first year of SF USP. At the end, SF USP schools do not only belong to the foundation and the local government, but also serve as the model school for all of the stakeholders in in the surrounding community.

SF USP schools are committed to rolling out the SF USP project to other schools in their immediate area. This is part of the sustainability aspect of the project and one that will ensure the continuation of school improvement throughout the nation.  Thus, representatives from non SF USP schools that are located in all our USP school-districts are frequently invited to attend training programs and participate in activities.

Exchanges and Infrastructure Improvements during and after SF USP

The Sampoerna Foundation has also donated computers, printers, library books, prizes and exchange programs for teachers and students around the nation (and even to Singapore). The exchanges have been incredible learning experiences for our SF USP school family. Physical improvements have been aided by the local government through the local education departments. Building plans for a completely new school in Balikpapan are complete and work will begin in June 2006. SMAN 2 Sekayu’s building renovation and extension will begin in May 2006.
