| Sampoerna Foundation Set Up Emergency School for Klaten and Bantul |
|
Initially, the Foundation had established ten emergency tents and set up 5 galley tents in areas that most affected by the earthquake, such as Bantul and Klanten. In the future, the Foundation has planned to extend its relief by providing emergency school tents that each can accommodate up to 40 students. In total, the Foundation has contributed around Rp 250 millions. Elan Merdy, the Chief Operating Officer of Sampoerna Foundation stated that “We are extremely concern with the current situation in Yogyakarta and Central Java as the death toll continues to rise everyday. As an organization that focuses on education in Indonesia, Sampoerna Foundation feels compelled to assist the victims, particularly those in the elementary and secondary levels. We hope that we can support their education by working together with the Yogyakarta’s Education Department and the Municipal governments of Bantul and Klaten. We know that our contribution is still in small scale, but we hope to reach as many quake’s victims as possible in efforts to restore their learning activities.” Until 31st May 2006, the Earthquake’s Center in Yogyakarta and Central Java reported that more than 173 school buildings are destroyed, 105 severely damaged and 852 slightly damaged. On the other hand, more than 53 teachers have been the quake’s victims with 18 deceased, 27 badly injured and 8 slightly injured. In the mean time, 55 students have been reportedly dead, 36 badly injured and 8 slightly injured. Up until now, the Foundation is still gathering data about its scholars as the evacuation process continued to take place. From its 772 scholarship recipients, 533 are active scholarship recipients and 239 alumni. So far, only 61 of them have been allocated while the whereabouts of the others remain unknown.
On behalf of the victims, the Yogyakarta’s Education Department together with the Municipal governments from Bantul and Klanten expressed their appreciation for the Foundation’s support. “We are truly grateful for the Foundation’s support in assisting the students in Yogyakarta and its surroundings, because many schools in those areas are completely destroyed. This will automatically stop the teaching-learning activities. Hopefully, this grant will encourage and motivate other institutions to start up their own emergency school tents,” Drs. Sugito M.Si as the Head of Yogyakarta’s Education Department. Elan added that “We will do our best in ensuring the availability of the psychologists in our emergency school tents, because obviously this natural disaster has tormented both the physical and psychological aspects of the children. For this reason, those experts will provide trauma counseling for the victims.”
Currently, Sampoerna Foundation has gathered its scholars from the Sampoerna Foundation Scholar Club Yogyakarta to collaborate with the Economics Faculty from UGM to assist the operational and implementation of temporary tents and emergency school tents.
