Emergency School from SF

Jakarta (Suara Pembaruan: 08/06/06) After setting up 10 emergency tents and 5 public kitchen tents for victims of the earthquake in Yogyakarta and Central Java, Sampoerna Foundation, a philanthropic organization focusing on the education sector, is providing emergency school tents.

“We are extremely concern with the current situation in Yogyakarta and Central Java. We feel compelled to assist the victims, particularly students in the elementary and secondary levels, to allow them to continue to learn,” said Elan Merdy, the Chief Operating Officer of Sampoerna Foundation, recently.

Each of the emergency school tents set up in Bantul and Klanten can accommodate up to 40 students. In total, the Foundation has contributed around Rp 250 millions. Head of Yogyakarta Provincial Education Agency, Sugito, said, “We are grateful for the assistance, because many schools in those areas are completely destroyed and this has stopped the teaching-learning activities.  We hope, this grant will encourage other institutions to set up more emergency school tents.”
