Learning Together to face Disaster

Yogyakarta (Kedaulatan Rakyat: 27/06/06) “Come on everybody... Be careful. Don’t be trapped, others should help!” Those instructions were heard almost every time in each group of students. Each group is trying to finish the challenges together. Cooperation and teamwork is one of the main requirements for a group to pass emergency posts.

Emergency Post (Pos darurat) is a game in which the participants are required to pass the mesh that has been set up. Without a planning and a strategy that have been discussed previously or without a strong team work it is impossible to pass those posts easily. Even though it was their first time to participate in such a game, the students of State Junior High School 1 Prambanan are not only excited, but they also try to meet all the challenges.

This activity invites students to face challenges together and to tolerate each other especially in the case of disaster. “This game is aimed at training students to face challenges,” said Anisa from Sampoerna Foundation (SF) after the out bound activity on Thursday (06/22).

Carrying out activities in open air will allow children to learn and to be friendly with environment and teaches them how to live with others. This is where their tolerance, collaboration and ability to accept other persons’ opinion and leaderships   are tested. Learning to live and live to learn, that’s what they are learning in outbound activities.

May be they can learn how to resolve problems, something they have never learnt at home or at schools. The demanding curriculum, parents’ occupation or unawareness that we also need to learn some thing about life, are the main reasons. “Therefore, we love to learn this way,” said Endang shyly.

Around 240 students of Junior High School 1 Prambanan Klaten were trying to forget about their sadness after their school has been flattened by the earthquake. That day, they have deliberately go to school earlier than usual and put on their sport uniform and they gathered in a field, around 3 kilometers from their school.
With the help of some students from Gadjah Mada University who were on their field work, members of the Sampoerna Foundation Scholars Club (SFSC) invited those students to carry out the outbound activities.
This is more than walking for 3 kilometers to the school. They also learn the courtesy in the street, respecting other persons they met, admiring other creatures, making use of the available time and solving problems during the journey.

“Therefore, there posts have been set up, namely trilling tunnel post, long post and emergency post,” said Anisa. Through the posts, children are divided into 24 groups; each group having 10 members will be evaluated, including their cooperation, teamwork, ability to resolve problems, strategy they implemented etc.

Therefore, we can hear them scream: “Don’t let go. Hold on, make it longer”, while they were passing through the long post, amid the cheers. Each group is trying to build a longer human chain than the others, using any means and style. “We were thinking how to build a longer human chain to beat the others,” explained Budi, one of the participants. Of course, they uphold sportive in the game.

As Anisa stated after the game, only those who are able to play fair will manage in their life. Therefore, no cheating, playing fair and respecting competitors, is the key to success in future life. “Meanwhile, teamwork, cooperation, tolerance, and respecting others;’’ opinion is the key to success in living in community. And all of that can be learnt. Therefore, during the time of disaster, there is a sense of community,” she added.
