Pangandaran: SFSC Bandung to the Rescue

pangandaran1After one week in Pangandaran, members of SFSC Bandung have been through several important events, from babysitting the abandoned children, helping the SARS team in lifting the dead bodies to being featured in the national television. Yet all rescue efforts were done with sincere intention and they have harvested profound experience in Pangandaran. Here is their daily report (from 19th July-24th July 2006):

Day 1

  • Survey the schools in Ciamis Town
  • Ciamis is relatively fine even though it is located near Pangandaran, the team then preceeded to Pangandaran coast.
  • Survey SMU 1 Pangandaran dan SMU 1 Cijulang:
    - The team had not learnt about the condition of the scholars as the schools were closed for holiday
    - The team discovered that many elementary schools in the area are heavily damaged.
    - A mass funeral took place in the coast and a boy named Herdy said that he had lost his siblings.

Day 2

  • Survey SMUN 1 Pangandaran and SMUN 1 Cijulang:
    - One of our scholars named Taufik was reportedly safe (SMUN 1 Pangandaran).
    - All of SF Scholars in SMU 1 Cijulang are safe(2 scholars had to move from their homes, 1 stayed in his relative's house and 2 still live in their houses)
  • Survey the Educational Infrastructure:
    - SD Sindang Jaya ( Legok Jawa 3 ) only had one building left.
    - SD Madasari  ( Masawah ) was severely damaged and could not function as a school anymore.
    - SDN 5 Pangandaran's building was fine, but the windows, fences, doors and other non-building elements were damaged.
    - Some of the constructions in SDN Ciparanti were torn down, but overall it still can operate as a school.

  • Head of the SFSC Bandung team, Aldi, had to return to Bandung to make other arrangements and he was substituted by other members of SFSC: Dimas, Robby and Isman.
  • One of SF scholars, Rahmat, was found and most of our scholars have moced to a safer place or stay in their relatives' residences outside Pangandaran. 

Day 4

  • Together with the SARS team, SFSC Bandung helped cleaning up the village
  • Second team conducted a survey in the south coast of Ciamis. No school was found damaged in the area.

Day 5

  • On this day, the nation celebrated the National Children's Day and the team also got to know the people in Parigi Province. The team has grown into 19 people, including our partners from Zero Mind. The team also took part in activities:  
    - morning exercise
    - outbound games
    - drawing contest
    - story telling and napping with the children
    - singing together
    - fireworks
  • During the event, several media were there to cover them (TRANS TV, Kompas, Republika, RRI)

Day 6

The team has registered all of the SF scholars in the devastated areas. The result was:

Safe                                                              123 people 
Evacuate in the shelters                                      4 people
Move to relative's house                                     3 people
