Introduction of 2006 curriculum reduces students’ burden
Surabaya (Surya: 29/07/06) The 2006 curriculum set up by the National Education Standards Agency (BSNP) has been introduced in several regencies and municipalities across the country including in East Java. The 2006 curriculum is an improvement of the Competency-based Curriculum introduced in 2004. It gives a broader authority for  teachers to set out their own sylabus.

The BSNP will publish the guidelines of content and competency standards that students must achieve. Schools are given the rights to set their own curriculum referring to those standards. “In the future, each school will have different curriculum depending on their own needs.  What should be emphasized is relevant life skills for students depending on their needs,” head of East Java Education Agency, Dr Rasiyo MSi, asserted on Friday (07/28).

The 2006 curriculum, said Rasiyo, is an implementation of the government’s regulation no.19/2005 on National Education Standard. Rasiyo rejected claims that the new curriculum only creates more problems for teachers and students. "On the contrary, schools are allowed to decide their own teaching materials, learning and teaching activities and to set the indicators of students’ achievement. The module handed by the BSNP will serve as a guideline. Therefore, schools actually need to study the 2006 curriculum guidelines beforehand. The new curriculum will be implemented next year. However, schools that are ready could start implementation this year," he explained.

In the 2006 curriculum guidelines, students’ study burden will be eased. School hours are reduced by around 100-200 hours per year. This means there will be a 10-20% of study load reduction and simplification of curriculum basic structure and framework. The 2006 curriculum is an advancement of the Competency-Based Curriculum, and it emphasized on active learning model. “Schools do not need to abandon the 2004 or the 1994 curriculum, because the 2006 curriculum will only be applied for first grade students," he added.
