200 High School Students from four provinces competed in SQIP Olympic Games

ImageSekayu, 31st July 2006 – Sampoerna Foundation (SF) –a non profit organization focusing on the education sector affiliates with the Musi Banyuasin local government to officially open the sports competition for high school students. The SQIP Olympic Games was held in Serasan Sekate Stadium, Sekayu Regency, South Sumatera on 31st July – 2nd August 2006. To view the pictures, please click here.  

School Quality Improvement Program (SQIP) is one of SF’s primary programs that aims to improve the quality of Indonesia’s state high schools. 

SMAN 2 Sekayu which is one of SQIP’s project samples becomes a host for 200 students who come from several areas. Six schools which are also SQIP’s pilot projects, such as SMAN 3 Depok, West Java, SMAN 5 Bukit Tinggi, West Sumatera, SMAN 11 Bandung, West Java, SMAN 4 Denpasar, Bali and other seven schools from Sekayu will compete in eight sport categories.

Chief Operating Officer Sampoerna Foundation Elan Merdy claims “We stress on the education system that has morale value, ethics and strong spirituality. Through SQIP project, we have committed to improve those schools’ quality in three to five years ahead. In the near future, we will adopt some schools for the SQIP program.”

SQIP Program is a result of affiliation between SF and Indonesia local government to provide the competency improvement for principals, teachers, students as well as parent through curriculum development and schools’ resources.

Elan adds, “Recently, there are six schools that have been joined SQIP program in Indonesia, SQIP Olympic Games is a congregation for students and teachers, also as a positive medium to compete among the students. Even though one of SQIP schools could not joined this competition, we hope this sports competition can be implemented annually.”

Alex Noerdin, Musi Banyuasin regent is very enthusiastic in organizing this sports competition. “We are very proud to be the host of this competition which can sharpening students’ talents and sportmanlike spirit in sports area. Musi Banyuasin has its own stadium, named Serasan Sekate Stadium with comprehensive sports facilities that will support this sports event perfectly.”

SMAN 2 Sekayu as the host sent the largest number of parcipants, 100 students, SMAN 3 Depok sent 27 students, SMAN 5 Bukittinggi sent 66 students, SMAN 4 Denpasar sent 12 students, and SMAN 11 Bandung sent 27 students. 

The eight sports competition which will be competed are:
1. Athletics (100m, 200m,  Relay race 4x100m, Relay race 4x400m, Long Jump, Shot-Put, Javelin Toss)
2. Swimming (Free Style 50m, Butterfly Stroke 50m, Breast Stroke 50m)
3. Basketball (Boys)
4. Volleyball (Boys-Girls)
5. Badminton
6. Table Tennis (Boys-Girls)
7. Tennis (Boys)
8. Futsal (Boys)
