Jakarta, August 9, 2006. The ability to use a foreign language, particularly English, is an absolute necessity at this time. Just imagine, data indicates that 80 percent of all websites on the Internet utilize the English language. As well, 60 to 85 percent of all email messages are sent in English. Some data even claims that 1 in 5 persons on the face of this planet speak English, albeit many on a rudimentary level.
At this time, according to data from the Department of Manpower, Indonesia has been flooded with more than 50,000 foreign workers, and it is assumed that 75 percent of these foreigners hold managerial positions, which enable them to make key decisions. For that reason, foreign languages are employed in lobbying, meetings and e-mail communication.
”At this time, the ability to utilize a foreign language could be said to be an investment. Foreign language skills can bring a great deal of benefit for the future when Indonesia becomes a part of the global village,” Sapto H Sakti, Commissioner of PT. Sampoerna Education, said after making a speech for the opening of the Sampoerna Language Center (SLC) at the Sampoerna Strategic Square building today (August 9, 2006).
The ability to use several foreign languages is now a necessity for workers, especially those employed by multinational corporations. Many companies require that their employees be able to communicate, make presentations, and even engage in debates in the English language. ”The ability to speak a foreign language is not only important in relation to one’s daily work routine, but is also a valuable investment for the company because it will enable the company to expand its networks and improve service,” Sapto explained further.
As an example, Sapto explained that AC Nielsen, a multinational is already providing In-House English Training for its employees through the Sampoerna Language Center (SLC). AC Nielson selected SLC because it has a complete program for improving language skills, including General English, Business English, Exam Preparation Classes, Bahasa Indonesia for Expatriates, and also Mandarin. For those who plan to continue their educations, SLC also offers the TOEFL ITP (Institutional Testing Program) and TOEFL Prediction Score to measure an individual’s potential TOEFL score.
SLC is supported not only by efficient and effective facilities and services for the students, but also provides highly qualified teachers of internationally recognized standards, who hold CELTA (Certificate in English Language Teaching of Adults) and TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) certification. Still another plus from SLC is that a segment of the funds generated from its language training programs is utilized to provide scholarships to assist needy children throughout Indonesia with access to education.
