Jakarta, 14th August 2006. A Dollar for Scholar, a fundraising program for education, was officially launched by the Foundation and Gran Meliá at the lobby of Gran Meliá Hotel, Jakarta. The event was also supported by Suprobo, a famous artist with realist style who exhibits his painting collection for one week in Gran Melia Hotel. Part of the sales of the paintings will be donated for education in Indonesia through this program.
Elan Merdy, Chief Operating Officer Sampoerna Foundation explained in his opening speech that the program’s objective is to widen the access of good quality education for Indonesian children through scholarships program. “We believe that all Indonesian citizens, whether businessmen, politicians, and Indonesian families, have equal responsibilities to provide quality education for our next generation,” Elan asserted. In this program, every guest who stays in the Gran Meliá Hotel Jakarta will have the opportunity to contribute at least one dollar for Indonesia’s education. The contribution can be conveyed directly to the receptionist desk or added automatically to the hotel’s bill. All the donation collected within this three months period will be utilised to provide education access for Indonesian children through Sampoerna Foundation’s scholarships program. “Gran Meliá Hotel Jakarta is supporting this program as one of our Community Involvement’s mission to achieve the betterment of Indonesia’s education”, Manuel Locher, General Manager of Gran Meliá asserted. According to the data from the Ministry of National Education in 2004/2005, there are more than 42 millions from 84 millions Indonesia children who are in the school age 5-24 years old, who can not go to school and experience education. ”50% of Indonesian children who are supposed to be at schools, do not have the opportunity to study. The other 50% who already study in schools still have the possibilities of drop-out and most of the possibilities are caused by financial problems, in every five minutes, ten students must drop out from their schools”, explained Elan further. Elan also added, the Sampoerna Foundation believes that education is the most significant factor in developing this nation. The enhancement of education’s quality will create great quality human resources and it will also foster the national development process. Due to these reasons, this fundraising program is very significant in encouraging people in Indonesia to take part in enhancing the Indonesia’s education quality.
