Jakarta, August 22, 2006 – PT HM Sampoerna Tbk. has given Rp. 47.6 billion to Sampoerna Foundation in fulfillment of its commitment to advance the education sector in Indonesia. The symbolic presentation of the funds took place today, with President Director PT HM Sampoerna Tbk., Martin G. King, turning the funds over to Chief Operating Officer Sampoerna Foundation, Elan Merdy.
The fund provided by PT HM Sampoerna Tbk. for 2006 will be focused on running the Sampoerna Foundation (SF) United School Program at five State Senior High Schools in East java and Yogyakarta: SMAN 10 High School in Malang, SMAN 1 in Pandaan Kabupaten Pasuruan, SMAN 13 in Surabaya, SMAN 19 in Surabaya, and SMAN 1 Pundong, Yogyakarta. This program, which will take place over a period of three years, will provide guidance to the selected schools through assistance with the administrative management of the schools, including the establishment and standardization of curriculum, the establishment and running of a library and the development of extracurricular activities. Besides that, a segment of these funds channeled through the Sampoerna Foundation will be allocated for reconstructing schools damaged by the recent earthquake in Yogyakarta. “The children of Indonesia have the potential for advancement and a strong enthusiasm for learning. With the proper guidance and the support of an improved learning and teaching process, we believe that more Indonesian students will be able to speak at the global level, so that someday they will be able to advance their people,” said Martin G. King. “Through the SF United School Program, we hope that schools will be able to help their students to reach the utmost potential,” he added. “The funds we have received make it possible for Sampoerna Foundation to expand its SF United School Program to four schools in East Java, as well as assisting with the reconstruction of two schools in Yogyakarta, one of which was a school adopted by the SF United School Program. Through the SF United School Program, we expect that these schools will become exemplary schools that produce quality students,” Elan Merdy explained. “Because of that, we deeply appreciate the commitment of PT HM Sampoerna Tbk. to supporting our activities and hope that this positive step will be followed up on by other companies,” he added. PT HM Sampoerna Tbk. has been the largest donor to Sampoerna Foundation since the foundation was established in 2001. Besides the funds provided for 2006, PT HM. Sampoerna Tbk. has channeled Rp. 119.8 billion through SF throughout the period of 2001-2005. Sampoerna Foundation has managed these funds for its scholarship program, as well as for the rehabilitation and restructuring of the education system in Aceh. These contributions are all in line with the community service mission of PT HM Sampoerna Tbk. which is centered on advancing education in Indonesia.
Besides providing funds to support the activities of Sampoerna Foundation, PT HM Sampoerna Tbk. has also carried out a number of other philanthropic activities in the education sector. For example, the Sampoerna Child Guidance program (Program Bimbingan Anak Sampoerna), which has been active since 1999, and which, among other things, runs a Mobile Library program to encourage the love of reading among the younger generation. Since 2000, PT HM. Sampoerna Tbk. has also provided scholarships to more that 1,000 of their employees’ children. Besides that, PT HM Sampoerna Tbk. also provided scholarships for children with good academic standing in Rungkut, Sukorejo, and Pasuruan in the period of 2000-2005.
