Sorong, June 15, 2007. Three high school juniors from Sorong have gotten scholarships from Sampoerna Foundation (SF), United World Colleges (UWC) and Schlumberger Foundation to further their studies at UWC schools in Costa Rica, Canada, and the United States. The presentation of the scholaships took place in the Mayor’s Auditorium in Samisssirat, Sorong, and was attended by Mayor of Sorong, J.A. Jumame; Chief Operating Officer of SF, Elan Merdy; and Manager for Global Citizenship of Schlumberger Indonesia, Sri Sulistiowaty (15/06).
The three Sorong students, Erin Saiof, Falorna Amaia and Desi Raturoma, will take part in the International Baccalaureate (IB) program for two years. After finishing this program, they will have the opportunity to continue their studies to universities abroad.
Since 2002, SF has sent 11 high school students from NAD (Aceh), Riau, East Kalimantan and North Sulawesi to study at UWC schools in America, Canada, Italy, England, and Singapor. And, since 2006, Schlumberger Foundation has been a partner with SF in this program.
In 2007, the selection of scholarship recipients was done in Sorong. “Weare very proud that our children have been chosen to not only represent Sorong, but also to represent Indonesia to study with students from various other nations at these international schools,” said Mayor of Sorong J.A. Jumame.
UWC itself is a global education movement that links up students of different backgrounds from various countries worldwide. Elan Merdy, Chief Operating Officer of SF said that the education offerred by UWC prioritizes highacademic standards, community service, and instills an attitude of tolerance and respect among cultures. ”We hope that these Sorong girls will not only gain knowledge at UWC, but will also share knowledge, experiences and cultures with the students from various other countries so that when they return home their hearts and minds will be filled with important things to share at home,” said Elan.
Elan commented further that one of the reasons that Sorong was selcted to take part in the UWC program was to improve the quality of human resources in Sorong in the long term. ”Hopefully all three of the young people being sent, Erin Saiof, Falorna Amaia, and Desi Raturoma, will study as hard as possible to gain as much knowledge as they can and come back to benefit Sorong and West Paupa as a whole,” said Elan.
The UWC Scholarship for Indonesia is managed by Sampoerna Foundation (SF) and the UWC National Committee (UWC NC) in Indonesia. Each year, SF and UWC NC determine the province that will send students to represent Indonesia at UWC schools.
West Papua itseld is a region that is close to the heart of SF. Up to the end of 2006, SF had provided 40 scholarships for students in educational levels ranging from elementary through high school in West Papua.
