Jakarta, 7 June 2007 – PT HM Sampoerna Tbk. (PT HM Sampoerna) handed over the reconstructed two school buildings that were damaged by the earthquake in Yogyakarta to the Bantul Regency Government. The two school buildings belonged to Bantul State High School 2 and Pundong State High School 1. President Director of PT HM Sampoerna Tbk., Martin G. King, symbolically presented the renovated schools to the Regent of Bantul, Idham Samawi, at State High School 2 in Bantul. Also in attendance during the handover was the Governor of Yogyakarta, Hamengku Buwono X.
Sampoerna Foundation assisted the reconstruction and rehabilitation works of the schools that began last year. The works included reconstructing the language and computer labs at the Bantul State High School 2 and rebuilding of virtually the entire school building of Pundong State High School 1. The reconstruction works covered 1,669 square meter and 1,020 square meter areas each for Pundong State High School 1 and Bantul State High School 2 respectively, involving a total cost of Rp3.3 billion.
After the handover, Martin G. King explained that adequate facilities will significantly support quality education. Martin hoped that other companies will also be committed together with PT HM Sampoerna to improving education in Indonesia.
Elan Merdy, Chief Operating Officer of Sampoerna Foundation concurred with Martin G. King. “Rehabilitating education after the Yogya earthquake takes a lengthy process and continuous commitment. What we are doing here with PT HM Sampoerna is the beginning stage of the more comprehensive rehabilitation for education in the areas of Bantul and Pundong. I hope that others will also participate in working together to improve the quality of education in Indonesia, particularly in Yogyakarta. Sampoerna Foundation is very thankful for the assistance from PT HM Sampoerna to work with us as a partner in advancing education in Indonesia,” said Elan.
PT HM Sampoerna has been a donor to Sampoerna Foundation since it was established in 2001. Up to 2006, PT HM Sampoerna has contributed Rp167.4 billion through Sampoerna Foundation. The contribution has been managed by the Sampoerna Foundation to carry out scholarship programs, reconstruction of educational facilities in Aceh and Yogyakarta and the United School Program (USP), which is a program aimed at improving the quality of a number of high schools in Yogyakarta and East Java, namely Pundong State High School 1, Malang State High School 10, Pandaan State High School 1, Surabaya State High School 13 and Surabaya State High School 19. The contribution is in line with PT HM Sampoerna’s social mission of advancing education in Indonesia.
In addition to the Sampoerna Foundation, PT HM Sampoerna has also carried out other educational support activities. Since 2000, PT HM Sampoerna has given scholarships to over 1,000 children of employees and to students living in the vicinity of Rungkut, Sukorejo and Pasuruan.
“It is our hope that the reconstructed schools can help improve education in this area. We also hope that the contribution will open up greater opportunities for young people in Indonesia for a brighter future and to achieve their dreams so that they may also contribute to Indonesia,” said Martin G. King.
