Jakarta, July 18, 2007 – The DKI Jakarta Provincial Administration has signed a memorandum of understanding with Sampoerna Foundation (SF) to improve the quality of education in the Special District of Jakarta. The signing was done by DKI Jakarta Governor Sutiyoso and Sampoerna Foundation Chairman of the Board Putera Sampoerna at the DKI Jakarta Governor’s office. (07/18).
This cooperation toward the improvement of the quality of education will start with the implementation of the Teacher Cell Group Development (TCGD) program in follow-up to the training of 1,000 elementary and junior high school teachers throughout DKI Jakarta that wrapped up in June 2007. The teachers participating in this training program are now ready to share their new capabilities with the other teachers in their schools. ”Through this program, we hope that all of the 40,000 teachers in DKI Jakarta will achievement better quality performance,” explained Élan Merdy, Chief Operating Officer of Sampoerna Foundation, who was also present at the signing ceremony.
Besides the TCGD, program, SF and the DKI Jakarta Provincial/Municipal Administration will implement the Master Teacher Development Program in order to produce teachers who are experts in their various fields of study. The development of this program will also be assisted by Edith Cowan University (ECU) of Australia that joined SF as a partner at the beginning of 2007. Besides ECU, the National Institute of Education (NIE) of Singapore has also partnered with SF to upgrade the quality of teachers.
”In the initial phase, our cooperation will be focused on improving the quality of teachers throughout Jakarta. We hope that this will benefit not only the teachers of Jakarta, but also their students. This cooperation is also expected to function as a model for further cooperation between private sector institutions and the municipal/provincial administration,” Élan added.
SF is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to improving the quality of and access to education in Indonesia. In Jakarta, SF has provided 362 scholarships for students at the elementary through high school levels. Besides that, most of SF’s MBA scholarship recipients studying abroad are from Jakarta or people from other regions who have been working in Jakarta. SF has also established the Sampoerna School of Business Management ITB, an Executive MBA program implemented in cooperation with ITB.
