Banda Aceh, July 27, 2007 – Head of the NAD-Nias Reconstruction and Rehabilitation Body (Badan Rekonstruksi dan Rehabilitasi NAD-Nias: BRR), Kuntoro Mangkusubroto; Rector of UNSYIAH, Darni M. Daud; Co-Chairmen of the United States Indonesia Society (USINDO), Edward Masters and Arifin Siregar; and Chief Operating Officer for Sampoerna Foundation, Elan Merdy, formally opened the UNSYIAH Lab School in Banda Aceh (July 27).
Darni M. Daud said during his speech that UNSYIAH Lab School was a dream come true. “UNSYIAH Lab School is part of the process of the development and democratization of Aceh that will result in quality higher level education throughout Aceh, Darni added. Edward Masters, USINDO chairman, agreed. During his speech, he expressed how proud USINDO was to be able to take part in this important initiative toward developing high quality people for the future of Aceh.
The Lab School, which is a partnership project among UNSYIAH, USINDO and Sampoerna Foundation, will educate new generations of Acehnese to think critically, solve problems through research, develop the habit of writing, develop expertise with computers, and speak English fluently. This school has been designed to develop and expand upon the most recent teaching methods. This school, in cooperation with the Department of Education and Knowledge at UNSYIAH, will become a center for the development of a new generation of teachers capable of improving education throughout Aceh.
This high school level Lab School, designed by a team of architects from UNSYIAH, has 9 classrooms that can accommodate 270 students. This school also features physics and biology, and computer laboratories, a library and an auditorium. In its first school year, 2007/2008, this school will select 90 students from among 620 candidates for its first ever 11th grade class. This school is expected to function as a model for duplication by other schools throughout Aceh. The UNSYIAH Lab School will be managed by the UNSYIAH Lab School Foundation.
Up to now, the rehabilitation of the education sector in Aceh has gone quite well. Data from the Department of National Education (Depdiknas) for 2005-2006 indicates that Aceh has achieved the standard ration of 333 students per school building. At this time, there are 268 high schools in Aceh accommodating 86,592 students, which means 323 students per school. Even so, not all of these schools can yet provide adequate facilities and educational systems for their students.
The Lab School, constructed on land owned by UNSYIAH, is expected to serve a student body of which 60% of the students come from the community immediately surrounding the school building in Syah Kuala district. Approximately Rp. 2.7 billion of the total construction cost for the school was donated by school-children in the United States who raised the funds by selling baked goods and washing cars. The rest of the funds donated for this program came from other donors in Indonesia and America.
Newmont also collected donations from its thousands of employees. Other organizations, such as IBM Indonesia and Cisco Indonesia, provided the highly useful donations of a complete computer network for the Lab School and computer training for the teachers and administrative staff of the school.
