350 Sampoerna Foundation Scholarship Recipients from throughout Indonesia ”Operate on a School”

This charitable activity by Sampoerna Foundation scholarship recipients from throughout Indonesia involved the repair of the school building and a “fun-learning” presentation to motivate the Bagade grade school children to take care of their school facilities and to instill in their minds a greater awareness of the importance of keeping things clean.

The Pasir Bagade Elementary School has only 3 classrooms that have to be divided off by screens in order to accommodate the 148 students studying in the first to sixth grades. These conditions motivated the scholarship recipients to undertake the “operation” on the school.  ”Based on the survey we did, we repaired the classrooms, two toilets, and a storeroom, as well as paving the assembly field, and providing furniture for the classrooms, and also planting trees. We also made an effort to empower the grade-school children themselves to continue to keep their school clean and in good repair,” said Badruzzaman Lutfi, President of the Sampoerna Foundation Scholars Club of Jakarta, who chaired the committee for this social-welfare activity.

The 350 scholarship recipients, studying in schools and universities all over Indonesia and abroad, deliberately traveled to Nagrak Village during their school breaks as part of the Sampoerna Foundation Annual Gathering and social-welfare activities. ”As scholarship recipients, we feel obligated to share our good fortune with other students so that they will have a more pleasant environment to study in. For that reason, we have all come together to do our very maximum with a great sense of solidarity and all of the energy we have,” Lutfi said.

The Sampoerna Foundation Annual Gathering is an annual event organized by SF to bring all of its scholarship recipients and alumni scattered throughout Indonesia and the world together. For 2007 this gathering carried the theme ”We Are The Future” and took place in the Gunung Guelis Adventure Camp (GGAC), where the participants shared their experiences and undertook social welfare activities together. This year, the SFSC of Jakarta once again hosted the event after previous years in which SFSC Yogyakarta, SFSC Bandung and SFSC Surabaya took their turns at hosting it.
