On 9th September 2007, Sampoerna Foundation officially launched the Sampoerna Legacy Book. The Sampoerna Legacy is a book about the history of the Sampoerna’s family, one of the most charitable families in Indonesia. The book combines the personal history of the four generations of Sampoerna with the rise and fall of a family company, set along aside the cultural and political history of Indonesia. Commissioned by Ms. Michelle Sampoerna (the eldest daughter of Mr. Putera Sampoerna – the third generation), the Book aims to preserve, in writing and pictures, her family’s perseverance, successes and travails over the past century in Indonesia. The launching of the book was presented in a series of talk shows using the theme “Young Indonesians”. The first talk show featured renowned writer Ayu Utami and young businessman Yoris Sebastian, while the second and third featured Sujiwo Tedjo, Djenar Maesa Ayu, Pandji Pragiwaksono and Farhan respectively.
The discussions will also feature Sudjiwo Tedjo and Djenar Maesa Ayu talking about “Cultured Young People” (11/09), along with Farhan and Pandji Pragiwaksono discussing “Concerned Young People” (15/09). “Frequently, the nationalism and culture of Indonesia is perceived as something heavy and difficult for young Indonesians to embrace, even though there are many easy and pleasant ways to reflect our love for all things Indonesian on a daily basis,” said Marta Yuliana, Communication Officer for Sampoerna Foundation, who also chaired the committee for the launching of the Sampoerna Legacy Book at Aksara in Kemang.
The Sampoerna Legacy Book, which was compiled by Michelle Sampoerna, the oldest daughter of Putera Sampoerna, is a light, pleasant to read book with a variety of attractive illustrations. “This book expresses how highly we value and respect tradition, culture and nationalism in a light, pleasant, but meaningful way. We hope that this book, along with the experiences shared by the speakers we will be presenting, can inspire young Indonesians to feel more proud of themselves and more motivated to do something meaningful for Indonesia,” Marta added.
The speakers involved in the “Young Indonesians” discussions will cover a wide range of topics concerning what the younger generation can accomplish for Indonesia, starting with sharing their own experiences and those of the Sampoerna family as set out in the Sampoerna Legacy book. Like this generation of the Sampoerna family, the speakers represent the younger generation that has already done a lot to express their love for Indonesia in a wide variety of ways.
Ayu Utami expresses her concern for Indonesia through highly critical writings, while Yorris expresses his in practical actions that reflect a strong sense of independence. Sudjiwo Tedjo and Djenar reflect their concern in the development of Indonesian culture through their works. Then there is Farhan, who attempts to provide access to education for children with special needs, while Pandji actively assists needy children with cancer to stay alive.
