Yogyakarta, September 18, 2007. PT ACE INA Insurance, a part of ACE Group of Companies, a world leader in insurance and reinsurance, dedicated new educational facilities at 8 schools in Yogyakarta in fulfillment of their commitment to provide assistance of US$ 100,000 or Rp 900 million collected by ACE Foundation to rehabilitate the education sector in Yogyakarta. This assistance, channeled through Sampoerna Foundation, has taken the form of the construction of laboratory facilities, the purchase of computer equipment and printers, as well as of for the school libraries.
The official dedication of the assistance facilities was marked by a demonstration of how to use the chemical laboratory equipment donated by ACE Indonesia by Komang Priambada, Head of Marketing & BD ACE Insurance and students of SMAN 1 Pundong High School (09/18). The assistance facilities were provided to the 8 schools, damaged in last year's earthquake in Yoyakarta, as listed below:
• SMPN 3 Jetis (Bantul)
• SMAN 1 Pundong (Bantul)
• SMAN 2 Bantul (Bantul)
• SDN 1 Banyusoco (Gunung Kidul)
• SDN 2 Patuk (Gunung Kidul)
• SDN Jelapan (Bantul)
• SDN Duwet (Gunung Kidul)
• SDN 1 Bantulan (Bantul)
”ACE Insurance has provided this assistance based on the specific needs of each of the schools that have been evaluated by Sampoerna Foundation,” said Komang Priambada. Komang added that the reason his company was providing this specific type of assistance was that other parties had been focusing on the physical reconstruction of school buildings destroyed in the Yogyakarta earthquake. According to National Coordinating Agency Bakornas)most of the assistance from government agencies, non-governmental organizations and private sector companies had been focused on reconstructing buildings. A maximal effort would also need to take into consideration the need for adequate facilities to enable children to practice what they learned. ”For that reason, support facilities, such as laboratories and libraries are significant,” Komang emphasized.
Yosafat Erie, Outreach Officer for Sampoerna Foundation, said that the post-quake rehabilitation for the education sector in Yogyakarta was an ongoing process. ”Even though the Yogyakarta earthquake happened more than a year ago, the rehabilitation process for education must be continued indefinitely. Once the schools have been rebuilt, we must also provide the necessary educational support facilities. After that we also need to look at the condition of the books being used, the teachers and other things. For that reason initiatives like that undertaken by ACE Insurance are truly steps in the right direction toward establishing a sustainable educational process Yogyakarta. Sampoerna Foundation greatly appreciates the confidence ACE Insurance has shown in its selection of Sampoerna Foundation as a partner in handling this assistance,” Erie said further.
Besides assisting with the facility support provided to the 8 schools in Yogyakarta, SF, along with its other partners, has also carried out various educational programs, such as the Sampoerna Foundation United Schools Program (SF-USP) for the improvement of the quality of schools, as well as participating in the reconstruction of damaged schools and the provision of scholarships.
