Jakarta (Republika : (20/10/07) We see thousands of children have been forced to drop out of schools due to financial constraint. Education is our basic need. Proper education will allow a person to develop his capacity and quality optimally. However, in reality, not every body can have access to education. The main reason is poverty. Many of our compatriots are still living under poverty. We see thousands of children have been forced to drop out of schools due to financial constraint. This is really saddening. What will our future generation become without proper education?

This situation has raised concern of many parties. They have carry out concrete measures to help deal with this problem. Corporates are among the ones who show concern on education. Through their corporate social responsibility (CSR) programs, they set aside parts of their benefit to help education, for instance, by providing scholarships for poor children. Among the companies is PT Electrolux Indonesia (EI). The home appliance manufacturer has offered free laundry for visitors of Plaza Semanggi in Jakarta recently. The activity themed ‘Sharing Happiness in Doing Laundry together With Electrolux’ is aimed at helping the education of underprivileged children in Indonesia. For the whole week, visitors could bring their dirty laundry to get them done using Electrolux washing machine. Visitors only need to show a bill from any store in Plaza Semanggi.

”People were quite enthusiastic. Each visitor bring between 10 and 15 clothes to have them washed,” said PT EI Marketing Manager, Fransisca Maya. Fransisca said, from each piece of clothes washed, EI will donate Rp1,000 for education scholarships  for street children. “This is part of our regular activity. By doing so, we would like to show our concern to those less fortunate," Fransisca said. To run this program, EI is working together with Yayasan Nanda Dian Nusantara (YNDN). YNDN will distribute the fund for the less fortunate children, orphans, victims of violence and children working in informal sectors under its guidance including newspapers vendors, shoe polishers, porters etc.

"We welcome this partnership. EI’s assistance will be very useful for our children especially for the improvement of their education," said YNDN chairman, Roostien Ilyas. Aside of serving for social activities Electrolux also uses the opportunity to demonstrate the capacity of its washing machine.  The Indonesian Museum of Records (MURI) was invited to witness the washing machine operation for 48 hours non-stop..
