Jakarta (Indo Pos: (25/10/07) Shopping in malls can help education. With this concept, Sampoerna Foundation managed to raise funds to prevent students from dropping out of school. The Foundation has just run its United for Education booth presenting various education data.
Hendri B. Satrio, Sampoerna Foundation public relations, said through the United for Education booth, SF invites Plaza Senayan visitors to show concern on Indonesian children education by purchasing merchandises or becoming foster parents. What have been exposed there? Sampoerna Foundation offers various interesting merchandises such as hats, t-shirts, shirts, and other unique accessories. “We have Lebaran cards as well as other greeting cards," Hendri said. Those merchandises were sold between Rp 10 thousands to Rp 65 thousands. If visitors do not wish to buy anything but want to help supporting Indonesian children schooling fee, they can donate through the commitment sheet available in the booth. “The entire revenues from the sale of these merchandises will go toward providing study scholarships for Indonesia children through the Sampoerna Foundation. Each elementary school student will get Rp 30 thousands per month, junior high school student get Rp 45 thousands and each SMA student will get Rp 60 thousand per month," Hendri explained. According to a data from the National Education Ministry in 2005/2006, over 1 million Indonesian students have to drop out of school every year. This means around 2.5 percent of school age population (7-18 years old), 35.78 percent of which have to drop out of school due to financial problems, 23,56 percent of them have to work to earn money, 15.77 percent have to get married and 24.89 percent due to other reasons. Based on these facts, Sampoerna Foundation as a professional philanthropy organization focusing on improvement of education quality and access to education, thinks it is necessary to hold and "awareness campaign" by opening an education expo booth in cooperation with some shopping malls and offices buildings in Jakarta. This dissemination program is expected to increase people’s awareness and concern to pay more attention to education in Indonesia. "Through the United for Education which runs from one shopping mall to another, we hope we can inform about the condition of education in Indonesia which needs support from the entire community," Hendri said. He hoped, through this campaign the foundation could reach the well-offs to have more awareness and to care for the condition of education in Indonesia.
Throughout the social week at the Plaza Senayan, there are 75 persons per day visiting Sampoerna Foundation booth. Each day between Rp 500 thousands and Rp 1.5 million have been raised, bringing the total revenue to Rp 36 million throughout the whole week. |
