As an education city, Yogyakarta should appreciate the fact that one of its schools has been selected to join the SF USP. With a significant amount of fund assistance, between Rp 500 million and - Rp 1 billion from SF efforts to improve quality could be carried out. The most interesting thing is even though the school quality is increasing, the schools would not increase tuition fee. After joining various holistic programs to be directed to top school, they should not improve alone. “SF asks them to share their knowledge with other schools. Therefore, they are required to share with other schools. Thus, adopted schools should become education quality catalyst in the region.

Eventually, the school is not the only one undergoing improvement, other schools as well,” said Sapto H Sakti. As SMAN 1 Pundong does, each time after teachers join subject content training (SCT), the next month they invite teachers from other schools to share their knowledge. “Sometimes we invite trainers from universities,” said Madiyono. The school has taken SCT in English, Indonesian Language, Economy, Physics, Chemistry, Religious Instruction, History, Civic Education, Geography, Sociology and Counseling & Guidance. Working hand-in-hand, together we improve education quality, now has become a new refreshing discourse in teaching-learning process, especially in SMAN 1 Pundong.

Even though the ‘knowledge-sharing program has not been carried out optimally, because the school has just undergone many trainings and is still trying to implement it in the school and for the students. Short-term objective, Madiyono said, hopefully, bilingual classes could begin immediately. According to Sapto H Sakti regional administration commitment is an important key to the success of education quality improvement in the region where SF USP has been carried out. From preliminary evaluation, he explained, out of three schools which became the pilot project , in Depok, West Java, Sekayu, South Sumatra  and Balikpapan in East Kalimantan , all of them have shown incredible progress.

Those schools’ academic and extra-curricular achievements are excellent, however according to Sapto, the one in Sekayu shows an incredible progress due to outstanding commitment shown by head of Muba regency. “Ideally, this program is carried out like that in Sekayu. Moreover Pak Alex (Muba regent) has a great commitment, improving human resources is necessary to improve a region. Therefore, he allocates over 20% of the regional budget for education while other regions have not. Even though this region is only an about-to-be-rich region,” explained SF Communication Director. Now Yogyakarta, through Bantul regency is challenged to establish a top State high school, or even an international-standard school. We are waiting for Bantul regency administration to show its commitment – including allocating a proper budget for education.
