Some of the 12th grade students were busy handling the tools, others checking the data, some other taking notes. They were testing the conductivity of various kinds of solution in the lab. Meanwhile, another group of students were doing other assignment in the lab for their chemistry subject. There was a small ‘explosion’ followed by laughter and astonishment form other part of the chemistry lab where some students were busy observing through their microscopes.
Students who carried out biology experiments seem more quite than their fellows in the chemical lab. But there were similar activities. Students took turn observing from the microscope and taking notes. Everybody was busy and silent. Students of SMAN 1 Pundong, Bantul are no longer intimidated by the chemistry, biology and physics. On the contrary, these subjects have become very interesting. Aside of the sophisticated equipments, the theories students are learning are getting more interesting, said Rini, adding that they now can do the experiments directly. “This makes us understand the subjects better. Previously we can only imagine about chemical compounds, for instance. But know, we know exactly what NaOH is,” Rini said representing her comrades. Now we take different subject, as we are now majoring Natural Sciences, we do a lot of experiments. “Almost every class has experiment sessions. Previously, it was not even once week,” Rini asserted responded by laughers by her friends. All of them agree, though, that the classes are getting more interesting, because the teaching materials are now presented in a more interesting way and it make it easier for them to understand. Meanwhile, in the school library, some students were seen trying to find the books they need. Librarian Soempeno said around 80 students read and borrow books from the library. “This is a significant increase. Previously it was only around 20 students per day. Most of them borrow novels, practical books and books about technology,” Added Soempeno who explained that the school has around 10,000 exemplars with around 700 titles. 9th grade students are also assigned to review the books they have read, at least one book per month. All these changes occurred after the earthquake and the school has been selected to join the Sampoerna Foundation United School Program (SF USP) since 2006.“Under this program, teachers get various trainings which are very useful to be implemented in the classroom. We get more experience, skill and method. As a teacher, we also find our self making some improvement in presenting teaching materials. We have also some adaptation in the curriculum after the trainings,” said Madiyono, physics teacher who is also Vice School Principal for Students Affairs at the SMAN 1 Pundong who met with journalists. According to him, the training has helped improve teachers teaching skills
