Master Teacher Program for 3 Provinces
Click to see real sizeJakarta, November 5, 2007 – Sampoerna Foundation Teacher Institute (SF TI) and Edith Cowan University (ECU) Australia are cooperating with the Education Offices of Jakarta, Bali, and Bangka Belitung to open a teachers’ workshop designed to create master teachers for Jakarta, Bali, and Bangka Belitung. The workshop titled “Master Teacher” was launched by Director General for PMPTK of the Department of National Education (Depdiknas), Fasli Jalal, and Director of the SF TI, Kenneth Cock, with senior ECU Australia educator, Dr. Graeme Lock, also on hand for the event at the SF TI campus (11/05). The Master Teacher Workshop will be held simultaneously in two places, the SF TI in Jakarta and the ECU campus in Perth. Selected program participants number 24, with 1 being a school principal, while 6 schools in Jakarta, Bali and Bangka Belitung will be sending 3 teachers each. The selection of the schools and the participants began in August 2007 and was carried out by the SF team and the pertinent regional Education Agencies.

This workshop will last 6 months and close with an evaluation, followed up by direct observation in Jakarta, Bali and Bangka Belitung to determine how well the participants implement what they have learned to become model teachers for their home regions. ”The main purpose of this workshop is to create master class teachers who can develop workshops and training for other teachers in their region,” Kenneth Cock explained after launching the Master Teachers program.

This Master Teacher Workshop is a continuation of an agreement between SF TI and ECU established last April as an initial step toward establishing a center for education innovation for Asia-Pacific teachers in Indonesia. ”The master teachers will go on to become education ambassadors from Indonesia capable of exchanging information with other Asia-Pacific educators. They are expected to become model teachers and share the knowledge they have with other teachers throughout Indonesia,” Ken added.

Ken said further that in the 1960s, Indonesia was recognized for its international quality teachers. Malaysia even imported teachers from Indonesia as instructors to improve the quality of education there. Now, however, the quality of Indonesian teachers lags far behind.

cording to data from the Department of National Education for 2005, if the 3,014 educators teaching at the kindergarten to university levels, 58.35%  failed to  fulfill standard undergraduate degree qualifications. As many as  934,680 of the teachers only hold high school or associates diplomas. Most of these teachers without undergraduate degrees, 1,256,245 or 91.06%, can be found working in either public or religious/Islamic elementary schools.
