In Indonesia, teacher certification doesn't work well because of many deviant aspects of the process. It is more like an instrument of selection rather than a strategic and productive instrument within the context of improving teacher quality. Our scholars also choose teaching reluctantly, fearing the financial hardship they may encounter. What we need to develop teaching and learning as a real profession is to revitalize its dignity.

It is hard to define an ideal teacher. The requirements are many. In Asia, the ideal teacher is a skilled performer. As with an actor or musician, the substance of the curriculum becomes the script or the score; the goal is to perform the role or piece as effectively as possible. Rather than executing the curriculum as a mere routine, a skilled teacher strives to perfect the presentation of each lesson.

In the U.S., teachers are judged to be successful if they are innovative, inventive and original. Skilled presentation of a standard lesson is not sufficient and may even be disparaged as indicating a lack of innovative talent. Many standards exist to say whether or not a teacher is ideal. These are different in each country. In my opinion, our teachers should meet five requirements: ability to explain things clearly, sensitivity to the needs and personality characteristics of individual children, enthusiasm for teaching, having high standards for children, and patience. I think teachers need to reflect on and implement each of these in their teaching.
