Teachers Conference: Education still far from reality
Jakarta (Kompas: (30/11/07) Education in schools is still far from reality despite the fact that education is supposed to prepare students to live their life and to work in the community. This fact is underscored by Jurgen Zimmer, president and founder of School for Life, and Helen Morrschel, Ciputra School Principal coordinator, at the 2007 Indonesian Teachers Conference in Jakarta on Wednesday (28/11). Around 800 teachers took part in the Conference themed “Better Community through Better Education” held by Sampoerna Foundation Teacher Institute, Provisi Education, and the National Education Ministry (Depdiknas).

Zimmer said children should be given the opportunity to develop themselves. Therefore, conventional education which only focuses on curriculum without getting in touch with day-today life should be revamp. The education run by School for Life in Germany and in Thailand, for instance, manage to create a favorable condition to stimulate children to be more creative and to be ready to lead their lives. Classes are enriched with various centers of excellence to provide children with the knowledge they need to take the opportunities and challenges in life.

Helen Morrschel asserted that learning inside the classroom is not enough. “Teachers have to create projects which exist in the real life to stimulate children to continue learning," Morrschel said. Giri Suryamatna, Secretary of the Directorate General of Education Resources Quality Improvement at the National Education Ministry, admitted that many people are still questioning whether education in Indonesia manages to produce an independent generation. One of the keys is teachers’ quality improvement.
