YOGYA (Kedaulatan Rakyat 04/12/07): Children education should not be ignored. As an investment for the future, education should not be disrupted by natural disasters. Therefore, rebuilding schools should be prioritized; because education is the key to a nation's welfare improvement.
Sampoerna Foundation (SF) Program Officer Hilman Ardiansyah and PR official Hendri B Satrio explained it to KR on Monday (3/12) at the Garuda Hotel Yogya. To maintain education sustainability, SF, according to Hilman will help rebuild 5 elementary schools that have been destroyed by the earthquake in May 2006. “This is not a new program. This is part of a series of SF’s assistance for school reconstruction in Yogyakarta in the aftermath of the earthquake,” he added. Three of the schools are located in Gunung Kidul regency, namely SD Banyusoca, SD Duwet and SD Patuk 2. Aside of those three schools, SF also helps rebuild two elementary schools in Bantul regency, namely SD Donotirto and SD Ngentak. Those schools still need help. “According to our assessment, those schools need between three to four buildings, not the whole complex that needs to be rebuilt,” Hilman explained. Around Rp 4 billion is needed for the reconstruction of 5 elementary schools and scholarships. “This project will be launched in January 2008,” Hendri added. With the new classrooms, teaching and learning activities could hopefully run well. Students would not have to take turn to attend classes. Continuity At the occasion, Hendri B Satrio explained that in channeling assistance, SF is focusing on education. Children education should not be disrupted by natural disasters, lacking of funds and so on. Moreover, according to Hendri, the problems facing education in Indonesia is clear: problems of access and quality. In 2007, SF has helped the development of 19 schools from elementary to senior high school levels. 13 schools received recovery assistance, 6 other schools have been adopted by the United School Program (USP).
Under the USP, teachers get various trainings for teaching quality improvement, including training on skill and method. Aside from allocating substantial budget for education, Hendri explained, SF is also receiving donations from local and foreign donors. Until 2007, donor’s disbursement in the form of various projects has reached up to Rp 70 billion. |
