‘Education will become business opportunity’
Jakarta (Bisnis  Indonesia: (11/01/08) Around 200.000 education institutions in the country – from elementary school to university levels - will become business entities. According to Director of Institute for Education Reform of the Paramadina University, Utomo Dananjaya, commercialization of education will be justified with the passing of the Bill on Education Institutions (RUU BHP) into law. Through the bill, the government hands over its responsibility over education to private sector.
"The Bill on Education Institutions is an indication of privatization because it reduces state’s responsibility on education sector,” he said in Jakarta this week. The deliberation of the bill will be finalized in the beginning of this year. Head of the RUU BHP drafting team Anwar Arifin, admitted that many quarters including students and education institutions / foundations have voiced rejection against the bill. However, according to him, the House of Representatives has listened to the public aspiration and lawmakers guarantee that the bill would not harm the interest of students and education institutions. In the bill, he added, lawmakers have put emphasize on government’s role in education financing through the State Annual Budget (APBN).
