Teachers’ moral in profesional certification

Jakarta (Koran Tempo: (23/01/08) During the teachers’ certification process, independent teams, as well as the internal team established by National Education Ministry’s Teachers’ Certification Consortium and the public have learnt about rampant cheating and violation committed by teachers who joined the certification through portfolio assessment. The irregularities found were varying from falsification of training certificate, award certificate, teaching working plan, and fake diploma. Moreover, almost all of the fake documents have been legalized by their school principles. There were also briberies, where money has been inserted among the documents submitted. The most embarrassing case was reported when assessor found a teacher replacing the photo of an original certificate owner with his own photograph in a falsified document which unfortunately for them mixed with the documents photocopies submitted for certification process. Each Teachers Training Institute appointed to oversee the certification process in their respective regions keeps the record of those irregularities.

However, those irregularities involved less that 3 percent of the entire applicants. The number of teachers who cheated is less than thousands out of almost 200,000 applicants. Even though the percentage of cheating was quite insignificant, generalization hurts honest teachers. A handful of dishonest teachers did not represent all teachers in Indonesia. The media has a big contribution in blowing up the news on those cheating and irregularities, and consequently there is an impression among the public that all teachers are dishonest. However, can we blame the media for reporting the news? Not really. Because the media source, the authorities interviewed by journalists were often being too eager to answer all the questions posed by the skilled journalists who direct them to speak about the subject readers love to read about: the rampant cheating. Media sources should have always emphasized that there are much more honest teachers than those who cheated and that the cheating does not represent the behavior of all teachers.

People’s Expectation

In such a short period of time of certification, which concerned teachers’ welfare, every one was panic. Under such a pressure some teachers committed violation. However, they are less than 3%, which is quite normal. Why should this create such a media and public frenzy? In my opinion, the press understands that the people want to see teachers do no wrong like angels. Because teacher is perceived as noble profession; thus, if teachers are cheaters, there will be no more moral guardians in this country. However, we have to realize that teachers are ordinary human beings, therefore, the belong to the grey areas, some of them behaves like angles, but some others beat their students, gambling and drinking alcohol, some other rape their students or stealing motorbikes. But how many of them? They are surely very few compared to teacher having good moralities.
