SMA Negeri Bali Mandara (Sampoerna Academy) was launched in July 2011 but it has been successful in making a national level achievement through one of its students, Made Gita Narendra Kumara. Narendra is one of the 75 scholarship recipients of Sampoerna Academy who passed a tight selection process from an initial pool of around 400 applicants in Bali province. On 13-14 September 2011, he represented Bali in an annual competition, the National Science Olympiad. The event took place in Manado, North Sulawesi and he won as the runner up in physics.

At first,, he was pessimistic that he could win the competition. Narendra, who is now at the grade 10, was aware that most of the 89 participants who came from all over Indonesia were grade 11 and 12 students. Naturally, there were many of them who were well experienced with the competition. Fortunately, his principal who accompanied him during the event encouraged and motivated him not to be disturbed by his “competitors”. “Never worry about your competitors since your biggest enemy is your doubt. If you believe in yourself and put aside all the fear and nervousness, you can make it”, said his principal.

Entering the competition day, Narendra did what his principal told him. He just concentrated on how to solve all the questions. Even though he was the second best winner, he was still very grateful. Through this achievement the door to compete in international level has now been opened for him. In November 2011, he is entitled to join the selection process for International Science Olympiad to be held in Yogyakarta.

While preparing himself to depart to Yogyakarta, Narendra mentioned that he was really eager to represent Indonesia in International competition. He also shares his dreams to become an International prominent scientist. He imagines that someday he will be able to make inventions that will be useful for the humanity. He knows that he can be anything he wants to be in the future as long as he has no doubt of himself.
