Among the many causes of poverty, including corruption, a centralized government, the lack of education access, and overpopulation, there are several fundamental problems that cause the nation to become trapped in the endless cycle of poverty. Before delving into the matter, we must first engage in self-introspection and ponder our personal view of the underprivileged.


Sampoerna School of Education (SSE) together with Putera Sampoerna Foundation held National Teachers Conference 2011 themed “Future Teachers, Future Leader”. The conference was held at SSE campus for two days, from 26th to 27th of October 2011, inviting 150 teachers at Jabodetabek area.


Previously on November 3rd, Putera Sampoerna Foundation received a total of 50 computers from PT. Bank Hana (HanaBank) as part of their donation program called “Hana Cares for Your Future”. This program does not only represent their Corporate Social Responsibility, but also contribution to community. It is held in cooperation with HanaBank, Korea (controlling shareholders).


2009 data from the Statistics Agency shows that 75.69% of women age 15 and above only graduated from junior high school or lower, with a majority of them (30.70%) only graduated from elementary school. The higher the education, the lower women’s participation is, with senior high school (18.59%), diploma (2.74%) and university (3.02%).


Sahabat Wanita, one of Putera Sampoerna Foundation’s initiatives regarding Women Empowerment, held a talk show titled “Challenges and Opportunities for Female Entrepreneurs to Reach Success” on December 6, 2011. The event was held to discuss various solutions in encouraging women to enter the entrepreneurship world.


“Jelajah Qurban Nusantara” was a program launched by Bait Al-Kamil, a Putera Sampoerna Foundation’s initiative under its Compassionate and Disaster Relief pillar. The program was jointly run with PT. Buana Sakti, building management of Sampoerna Strategic Square, and Majelis Ta’lim Manulife in welcoming the Idul Adha 1432 H Day of Sacrifice.


Several parts of the Special Region of Yogyakarta that were hit by the Mount Merapi eruption late October 2010 are still left relatively untouched, with many of the victims still in mourning, grieving and living off the disaster reliefs. Bait Al-Kamil as an initiative of Putera Sampoerna Foundation working in the field of Compassionate and Disaster Relief, was moved to help through its agroindustrial village program.


Success story Two students of SMAN 10 Malang (Sampoerna Academy), Yusman Ahmad Nur and Anisa Naziha, created an environmental bicycle or e-cycle for their science project. This creation turned out to be their ticket to participate in a science project competition both at national and international levels. They eventually won a gold medal in International Design Competition, Dreamline 7th International Design Olympiad (IDO) 2011, in Ankara Turkey, in June 2011.


The Local Education Department at the district level for the Municipality of Malang is providing its full support for Sampoerna Academy in East Java. On February 25th 2009, the Head of Local Education Office of Malang, Drs. H. Shofwan S.H. signed a cooperation agreement with Eddy F. Henry, Programs and Alumni Affairs Director of Sampoerna Foundation (SF). The proceedings were witnessed by Drs. H. Rasiyo, M.Si, Head of Local Education Office for East Java Province; Sapto H. Sakti, SF Communications Director and Yos Adiguna Ginting, Corporate Affairs Director of PT. HM Sampoerna Tbk.
