The USBI Approach

Student-centered Education
The philosophy of student-centered education shifts the emphasis of education from the teacher to the student in the areas of teaching, learning, and support services. USBI is committed to creating a culture of success that places the student experience at the forefront of our academic and non-academic offerings — from the design of our social learning spaces to the integration of social media in our courses to the collaborations with industry that advance our curriculum and help students launch into successful careers.

Active and Experiential Learning
Every student enrolled at USBI will be challenged to reach their full potential through rigorous academics that are facilitated through active and experiential learning methods. USBI has invested in bringing the latest thinking in instructional design to its modern campus. Classrooms are equipped to foster active participation with panoramic whiteboard surfaces, adaptable learning configurations, and studio-lab designs. E-learning capabilities supplement in-class instruction with a virtual course delivery that can be customized for specific student needs. Finally, experiential learning is integrated across all levels of USBI’s curriculum. From semester-one until graduation, USBI students will be guided in practical learning experiences, including field projects, case studies, and working in prototype businesses and internships.

Each study program curriculum is designed to be interdisciplinary, multi-entry and multi-exit, allowing for flexibility based on student needs.

Faculty of Science and Technology
The Faculty of Science and Technology offers degree programs that equip students to apply science and technology to drive new ideas and processes across many sectors. The curriculum considers how science and technology impact hygiene, nutrition, medicine, the environment, food security, and more, challenging students to develop solutions and technologies to address these issues. Our degrees are interdisciplinary and focus on applied knowledge, allowing students to understand their course of study as it relates to the world and to industry. We address the global need for graduates with hard science, math, and technology skills, while focusing on how to optimize these skills for employment in many industries.

Institute of Social Development and Community Outreach
The Institute of Social Development and Community Outreach delivers high-quality learning, pedagogical research, consultancy, and outreach activities in all aspects of community service, social development and responsibility, community action, and sustainable development. It supports research, grants, staff and student engagement, courses, and delivery of the special characteristics of leadership, entrepreneurship and social responsibility to advance both academic and scholarly objectives.

The Institute of Languages and Communication equips students with meaningful English communication skills benchmarked against international standards. With a diverse, creative Indonesian and foreign staff and carefully crafted student-centered curriculum, the Institute encourages students to honor their mother tongues and cultures while diving into rigorous academic English immersion and critical thinking. The curriculum reflects the reality of postgraduate experience, which is that students will need to produce and interact with English language in many different formats, both professional and academic. The full ILC English curriculum has been carefully crafted to ensure students' competency in: academic reading, essay writing and citation, presentation skills, professional English-language-conventions communication, critical thinking, and peer review. Students spend four full semesters with our English teaching staff who facilitate learning through student-led class activities, one-on-one tutoring, and internet forums and discussions.

American International Mobility Study (AIMS) Program: Your Key to Affordable International Education

The AIMS Program is the first US-accredited Associate Degree study program in Indonesia. The first two years of the program are delivered jointly with Lone Star College (Texas, USA) – the largest community college in the USA – and lead to an “All-American” Associate Degree.

This degree allows our students to transfer to universities in the USA where they will earn their Bachelor’s Degree with only two more years of study and save thousands of dollars in tuition fees. Students with qualifying grades will be eligible for additional tuition waivers and scholarships at public universities in Texas and at other universities across the USA.

Students who transfer through the AIMS Program will benefit from personal and academic counseling support for a seamless transition and negotiated tuition rates. They will also retain USBI enrollment so that upon graduation abroad, they will be able to complete a Capstone Project with USBI, transfer credits, and receive a second Bachelor’s degree from USBI.

Internships/ Work Experience

All USBI students will participate in workplace internships to develop real-world skills and broaden their career prospects. USBI support staff will collaborate with industry partners to help students search for internships. Students may utilize resources from within the Sampoerna Group to find the best internship experience for them.

USBI Capstone Project

All USBI students will collaborate in cross-faculty groups to complete an USBI Capstone Project. Students who elect to transfer overseas  after completing our USBI/LSC curriculum may return to Indonesia upon graduation from their overseas institution to complete the USBI Capstone Project and receive an USBI Bachelor's Degree.

USBI Capstone Projects will be as diverse as our students – the possibilities are endless:

  • Social and Environmental Design students may work with Management students to solve water supply problems in inner-city Jakarta
  • Computer Games Engineering students may create an educational computer game with Mathematics Education students
  • Film, Video and Photography students may generate images and visual narratives for mobile devices with Mobile Communication Technology students
